FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART September 3, 2024

Labor Day is an unusual holiday. The history of it goes back to the 19th Century, as a means to honor our labor unions and the workers across the country. Labor Day is intended to honor the common workers who helped change the way our nation views its workforce, allowing for economic freedom and liberty. The holiday offers American workers a three-day weekend break between Independence Day and Thanksgiving Day.

What makes this holiday unusual is that it is most often enjoyed as a break from labor, despite the name. Many businesses are closed to give their employees a day off. So, there is generally not much “labor” taking place on “Labor Day.” Most people take advantage of this final opportunity for some family time, as the new school year is starting.

As your pastor, I am grateful for those who labor for the Lord at Cordova Baptist Church. We are blessed to have a faithful staff, who have all served the Lord and His Church for many years. God has assembled a loving, caring group of people, who work well together. We are fortunate to have two very precious ladies, Joyce Tate and Margie Whitney, who serve as Church Secretary and Church Pianist/Treasurer respectively. In addition, we have a very talented Minister of Music in Bro.

Ken Goldsby. It is a joy to work with these dedicated individuals.

In addition to our church staff, we also have a number of gifted people who work diligently behind the scenes. We are blessed to have members who use their time and their talents to keep things going and looking great at the Lord’s House. They do everything from changing light bulbs and fixing toilets to decorating the sanctuary and fellowship hall. We also have some committed Teachers and Deacons, many of whom serve in multiple ways. While the first Monday in September is officially “Labor Day,” we have people who labor faithfully for the Lord throughout the year. I praise God for each one of you, and for your loyalty to the Lord and to His people! Happy Labor Day to you, no matter what the date on the calendar!

Serving in love,

Bro. Jim
